The CPU module is equivalent to the human brain and heart, constantly collecting input signals, executing user programs, and refreshing the system's output; Memory is used to store programs and data.
1. CPU chip
The CPU module mainly consists of a CPU chip and memory. PLC uses the following types of CPU chips:
(1) Universal microprocessors, such as Intel's 808680186 to Pentium series chips;
(2) Single chip microprocessor (microcontroller), such as Intel's MCS51/96 series microcontroller;
(3) Bit chip microprocessors, such as the AMD 2900 series bit chip microprocessors.
2. Memory
The memory of PLC is divided into system program memory and user program memory. The system program is equivalent to the operating system of a personal computer, which enables the PLC to have basic intelligence and can complete various tasks specified by the PLC designer. The system program is designed by the PLC manufacturer and solidified in the ROM, and cannot be directly read by users. The user program of PLC is designed by the user, which determines the specific relationship between the input signal and output signal of PLC. The capacity of user program memory is generally measured in words (each word consists of 16 binary numbers), and Mitsubishi's FX series PLC refers to the unit of user program memory as step (i.e. word). The user program memory capacity of small PLCs is around LK words, while the user program memory capacity of large PLCs can reach several megabytes.
PLC commonly uses the following types of memory:
(1) Random Access Memory: (RAM)
Users can use a programmer to read out the contents of RAM or write user programs into RAM, hence RAM is also known as read/write memory. It is a volatile memory, and when its power is disconnected, the stored information will be lost.
RAM has high working speed, low price, and is easy to rewrite. In order to save user programs and certain data (such as counter counts) in RAM after turning off the external power supply of the PLC, a lithium battery is equipped for the RAM. Some PLCs still use RAM to store user programs.
The lithium battery can be used for 2-5 years. When the lithium battery needs to be replaced, the "battery voltage too low" LED on the PLC panel will light up, and an internal flag will change to "l" status. Its normally open contact can be used to turn on the indicator light or sound and light alarm on the control panel, notifying users to replace the lithium battery in a timely manner.
(2) Read Only Memory (ROM)
The content of the ROM can only be read and cannot be written. It is non volatile and can still store stored content even after its power is lost. ROM - A system program commonly used to store PLCs.
(3) Electrically erasable EPROM (EEPROM or E2PROM)
It is non volatile, but it can be programmed with a programmer, combining the non volatile nature of ROM and the random access advantages of RAM. However, the time required to write information is much longer than RAM, and EEPROM is used to store user programs. Some PLCs use EEPROM as the basic configuration, while others use EEPROM as an optional option.
