Precision casting, also known as investment casting or lost wax casting, is a manufacturing process used to create complex and detailed metal parts with high accuracy and surface finish. It involves several steps:
Wax pattern production: A wax pattern is created by injecting molten wax into a metal mold or by 3D printing the pattern. The pattern replicates the final shape of the desired metal part.
Assembly: Multiple wax patterns are attached to a central wax gating system, forming a cluster or tree-like structure called a "sprue."
Investment (Mold) Formation: The wax pattern assembly is dipped in a ceramic slurry and coated with a fine ceramic material called "investment." This process is repeated several times to build up a strong ceramic shell around the wax patterns.
Dewaxing: The ceramic shell with the embedded wax patterns is heated, causing the wax to melt and drain out, leaving behind cavities in the ceramic shell that match the shape of the desired metal part.
Preheating: The ceramic shells are preheated to remove any remaining moisture and to prepare them for the metal casting process.
Metal Casting: The preheated ceramic shells are filled with molten metal, typically through gravity pouring or vacuum-assisted processes.
Cooling and Solidification: The filled ceramic shells are allowed to cool and solidify, forming the final metal parts.
Shell Removal: The ceramic shell is broken or removed from the metal parts through various methods such as mechanical vibration, sandblasting, or chemical dissolution.
Finishing: The cast metal parts undergo post-casting processes like cutting off the gating system, surface finishing, heat treatment, machining, and any necessary inspection and quality control procedures.
