In the hypoid gear above, the larger gear is called the crown while the small gear is called the pinion. Hypoid gears are a type of spiral gear in which the shape is a revolved hyperboloid instead of conical shape. The hypoid gear places the pinion off-axis to the ring gear or crown wheel.
There are three gear axes configurations: parallel, intersecting, and non-parallel/ non-intersecting. Gears with parallel axes resided parallel to each other, one shaft rotating in the opposite direction of the other. Gears with intersecting axes intersect on the same plan.
