Progressive stamping is a highly efficient metalworking process that combines punching, coining, bending, and other forming techniques. These operations are integrated into a single progressive die set with an automatic feeding system to streamline high-volume manufacturing.
The process begins with a metal strip fed from a coil, which is pushed through a series of die stations. Each station performs a specific operation, gradually shaping the metal into the desired part. The final station executes a cutoff operation, separating the finished component from the remaining strip (referred to as the carrying web). Any excess material, including previously punched-out sections and the web itself, is ejected as scrap—typically via underground conveyors in automated production lines.
The die set is mounted in a reciprocating stamping press. As the press moves upward, the top die lifts, allowing the material to feed forward. When the press descends, the die closes and performs the stamping operation. With each press stroke, one complete part is produced and removed from the die.
Because each station relies on the precise positioning of the strip, alignment is critical. To ensure accuracy within a few thousandths of an inch, conical "pilots" engage with pre-pierced holes in the strip, supplementing the feed system which may lack sufficient precision.
Progressive stamping can also be performed using transfer presses, which utilize mechanical fingers to move components between stations. While transfer presses operate at slower speeds, they are better suited for deep drawing—a process where the depth of the drawn part exceeds its diameter.

Avoid features placed too closely together.
Limit narrow cuts and thin protrusions.
Simplify designs whenever possible.
