The metal pall ring packing was introduced in the 1940s by the German company BASF. It is a type of packing made out of sheet metal and has a total area of approximately 35% of the total area of the ring wall. When compared to the same specifications of the raschig ring packing, the pall ring packing has several advantages.

Due to the numerous holes in the ring wall, the pall ring packing allows for gas and liquid to flow freely through the tower window, thereby improving the gas and liquid distribution within the packing layer. This results in significantly improved separation performance compared to the raschig ring packings. As a result of these benefits, the pall ring filler remains one of the most commonly used types of ring packing today.
