Aluminum alloy 6061-T6 is an excellent choice for making precise CNC machined parts as the following reasons:
Aluminum 6061-T6 is a widely used aluminum alloy that offers a great balance of mechanical properties, machinability, and cost-effectiveness. The "T6" designation indicates that the alloy has been solution heat-treated and artificially aged, resulting in a high-strength, corrosion-resistant material that is well-suited for precision machining.
The 6061-T6 alloy has a tensile strength of up to 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a yield strength of up to 280 MPa (41 ksi), making it strong enough to withstand the rigors of CNC machining without deforming or distorting. Additionally, the alloy's relatively low hardness (Brinell hardness of around 95) makes it easy to machine with tight tolerances using sharp cutting tools.
The excellent machinability of 6061-T6 allows for the production of complex, intricate parts with exceptional dimensional accuracy and surface finish. CNC machines can hold tight tolerances, typically within ±0.05 mm (±0.002 inches) or even tighter, depending on the specific application. The surface roughness can also be finely controlled, often in the range of Ra 0.8 to Ra 1.6 microns, which is suitable for many precision engineering applications.
Furthermore, 6061-T6 aluminum is relatively affordable compared to other high-performance alloys, making it a cost-effective choice for prototype development, small-batch production, and applications where precise CNC machining is required.
