Brushless motor basics
BLDC motors overcome the need for a mechanical commutator by reversing the motor setup; the windings become the stator and the permanent magnets become part of the rotor. The stator typically consists of steel laminations, slotted axially to accommodate an even number of windings along their inner perimeter. The rotor consists of a shaft and a hub with permanent magnets arranged in two to eight pole pairs alternating between "N" and "S". Because the windings are fixed, a permanent connection can be made to power them. In order for the stationary windings to move the permanent magnets, the windings need to be energized (or commutated) in a controlled sequence to generate a rotating magnetic field.
