There are, of course, digital compression plug-ins, but analog compression has its own sound. Unlike the DSP offered by competing models, the compression isn't combined with EQ, so you can confidently EQ the recording later in software and not have to worry about whether it's something that has already had EQ applied.Are the Hype modes useful? I'll offer up an enthusiastic yes. I'm not a huge fan of Smash mode, but the other two offer up some subtle possibilities for dynamically compressing a signal and not destroying the recording in the process. I'd be far less of a fan if you couldn't disable the compression, but having it there as a tool is exceptionally useful, particularly if your recording setup lacks compression currently.
