Paper casting tubes are hollow conduits made from waste paper, inorganic fibers, high-temperature resistant materials, binders, and other raw materials. They are manufactured through vacuum suction molding and wet pressing, and are used as casting tubes in the gating systems of casting processes. Depending on the design requirements of the gating system, various shapes such as straight tubes, elbows, reducers, and tees can be selected.

The production process of paper casting tubes does not require high-temperature drying or sintering, achieving the necessary drying through ambient temperature and natural air flow. Compared to ceramic casting tubes of the same specifications, which require sintering at high temperatures of 1200°C, the energy consumption of paper casting tubes is significantly lower than that of traditional ceramic casting tubes.

During production, paper casting tubes have become the most favored casting tubes by operators due to their lightweight and easy-to-operate characteristics. Paper casting tubes of the same specifications weigh only one-tenth of ceramic casting tubes, making them easy to transport, cut, and connect. They are also pollution-free and reduce labor intensity, helping operators overcome the heaviness, dust, difficulty in cutting, and connecting issues associated with traditional ceramic casting tubes, as well as the overall operational challenges.

In 2014, SHM began developing an environmentally friendly paper casting tube project in collaboration with Ningxia Share Group. By 2015, they completed the molding process, formulation, and trial casting of the paper casting tube project. During ongoing experiments, it was found that the product quality did not meet the requirements for casting large castings. After six months of experiments and equipment improvements, the shaping process for the paper casting tube project was developed in 2016. Through continuous collaboration like TEMC and improvement with several partners, the self-manufactured products of the paper casting tube project can now meet the requirements for all cast iron castings, and some manufacturers are even using them for small cast steel castings.
