GPON data rate description

A TDMA, time division multiple access, format is used in GPON in order to designate bandwidths to each ONU. Depending on the service provider and how they decide to allocate the bandwidth, each ONU can receive a downstream rate of 2.488 Gbits/s.

GPON upstream

The upstream rate however will receive less than its maximum due to the sharing of other ONUs. The ONUs will communicate with the OLT and it will determine the distance and time delay for every subscriber.

GPON downstream

In downstream transmission, the lasers wavelength measures 1490 nm while the upstream wavelength measures 1550 nm. A single mode optical fiber coming from a central office, runs to a passive optical power splitter located near end users’ locations. The optical splitter will then divide power into separate paths which can range from two to sixty four. From the optical splitter, separate single mode fiber strands will run directly to the end user’s home, business, school, etc. This transmission can reach up to 20 km starting from the central office running to the user. With GPON transmitting downstream in a broadcast manner and upstream in a TDMA (time division multiple access) manner, different bit rates are possible with 1.2 Gbit/s in upstream and 2.4 Gbit/s in downstream is most common.

NTW-G19008C2 provides 8 downlink 1000M GPON ports, 4GE Ethernet ports and 2 * 10G uplink ports. The height is only 1U for easy installation and space saving. It adopts the advanced technology, offering efficient GPON solution. It can support different ONU hybrid networking which help save a lot of cost for operators.
