EEG Electrode (Collodion) description:
Electrodes in EEG
1. The EEG electrode is used to measure the EEG signal, and the electrode that conducts the current signal is made of metal with good electrical conductivity.
2. The PHiliphhilipysical types of EEG electrodes Common eeg electrodes are mostly pure silver (Ag), silver chloride (AgCl), pure silver-plated silver chloride, pure silver-plated gold (Au) and other electrodes according to their production materials. Pure silver electrode: pure silver electrode (semi-finished product) has good electrical conductivity and is easy to oxidize and blacken after long-term use. Silver chloride electrode: silver chloride electrode (finished product) has good electrical conductivity and is not easy to be oxidized in the air. The electrode material used, like the conventional electrodes currently used on the electrode cap, use this material. Sterling silver gold-plated electrodes: gold-plated sterling silver, with good electrical conductivity, are mostly used in dynamic EEG and sleep monitors.
Types of electrode caps
Wet electrode caps (need to inject electrolyte between the electrodes and the scalp), which can be divided into: gel electrode caps, salt water electrode caps and semi-dry electrode caps. Gel electrodes and saline electrodes are the most commonly used sensors to measure EEG signals. These two types of electrodes require the use of a highly conductive electrolytic substance (conductive paste or kcl solution) between the head and the electrode to obtain good contact and reduce the head-to-electrode impedance. At some point, the use of conductive paste electrodes may also require some skin treatment, such as descaling, to improve contact quality. Advantages of conductive paste electrode: better signal-to-noise ratio, good transmission signal, and easy impedance drop. Disadvantages: It takes a long time to apply conductive paste, the subjects are uncomfortable, consumables need to be purchased in large quantities, and ordinary conductive pastes are not recommended to be used for more than 3-4 hours, which are easy to dry out. Applicable fields: Most of them are used in scientific research to ensure good signal quality.
Saline electrode cap
Signal transmission can be carried out using a certain proportion of salt solution. Advantages: No need to apply conductive paste, the wearing time is short, the impedance is easy to drop, and the subjects are also comfortable. Disadvantages: The duration is not long enough, at most 1 hour, the liquid flows easily. Scope of application: It is very convenient to use when the subjects are the elderly or children.
semi-dry electrode cap
Signal transmission is carried out while wet with a small amount of water droplets (half-dry electrodes are almost dry, but not quite). This electrode cap is not very common. In fact, when a dry electrode cap is used, a little conductive paste is applied to the electrode. This type of electrode cap is a semi-dry electrode cap. Compared with the pure dry electrode, the signal quality will be better; compared with the traditional gel electrode, the experiment preparation time is shortened, and there is no need to clean the equipment and head after use. Disadvantages are also obvious, similar to dry electrodes.
Electrode cap
The electrodes are in direct contact with the scalp without any electrolytes. Advantages: No need for conductive paste, no sticky, no need to wash hair after use. Disadvantages: The impedance is not easy to drop, the signal quality is also average, and there will be large artifact signals. Applicable fields: The main purpose of dry electrode caps is to solve real-world environments or professional products or services, and it will be more suitable for the transformation of brain-computer interfaces in the future.
touch proof connector description:
Most of the electrodes are industry standard 1.5mm anti touch electrodes and 1.5mm anti touch electrodes. This socket can be plugged into almost any modern EEG, ERG or EMG machine. Technically, these 1.5 mm anti touch connectors comply with the din 42802-1 standard adopted more than 20 years ago to make the electrode safer (according to IEC 60601-1; sometimes written as DIN 42 802). No more bare metal pins; All metal parts are embedded in the plastic shell to minimize the risk of electric shock. 1.5mm is the diameter of the concave metal needle in the socket of EMG or EEG machine. The actual outside diameter of the plastic electrode plug (and the corresponding socket in the machine) is usually just over 4mm. The concave pin on the machine is connected to the "male" half, and the anti touch safety socket on the electrode is "female", although it has the appearance of a plastic pin. As can be seen from the picture, the anti touch safety socket has many shapes, colors and appearances, but they are all designed to suit the same socket on your EEG or EMG machine.
A major exception is concentric EMG needle electrodes. Since the concentric needle has both movable electrode and reference electrode in one needle, the standard anti touch safety socket is not an option. On the contrary, concentric needle electrodes usually use reusable cables ("needle holders", such as bioc-nh for bionen concentric needles or SFC cables for technomed concentric needles) to connect the needle at one end and a 5-pin DIN connector at the other end. Each concentric needle manufacturer has its own proprietary cable, usually connected only to their needles, but is compatible with modern EMG machines with standard 5-pin DIN sockets for concentric needle electromyograPHiliphhilipy.
