What is a solid-state relay?
A solid-state relay (also known as an SSR, SS relay, SSR relay, or SSR switch) is an integrated non-contact electronic switching device that is tightly assembled from an integrated circuit (IC) and discrete components. According to the switching characteristics of electronic components such as switching transistors, bidirectional thyristors, and other semiconductor components, the SSR can switch the "ON" and "OFF" states of the load very quickly through the electronic circuit, just like the function of traditional mechanical relays with the previous compared to "coil reed contact" relays (i.e. electromechanical relays) (EMRs), there are no moving mechanical parts inside the SSR, and there is no mechanical action during the switching process of the SSR. Therefore, solid-state relays are also called "non-contact switches".
The main advantages of solid-state relays are as follows:
● Semiconductor components act as switches for relays, which are small in size (compact) and long in life (long life).
●Better electromagnetic compatibility than EMR - Anti-radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI), low electromagnetic interference, and low electromagnetic radiation.
● No moving parts, no mechanical wear, no action sound, no mechanical failure, and high reliability.
● No spark, no arc, no burning, no bounce of contacts, no abrasion between contacts.
● With the function of "zero voltage switching, zero current shutdowns", it is easy to realize "zero voltage" switching.
● Fast switching speed (SSR switching speed is 100 times that of ordinary EMR), high working frequency. High sensitivity, the low power control signal (SSR can directly drive high current load through small current control signal), compatible with logic circuit (TTL, CMOS, DTL, HTL circuit), easy to realize multiple functions.
●Usually made of packaging insulation materials, with good moisture resistance, mildew resistance, corrosion resistance, vibration resistance, mechanical shock resistance, and explosion-proof performance.
Solid State Relay Description:
