AT Cut Quartz Blanks Used In Oscillators To Microbalances
AT-cut quartz crystals are widely used in applications ranging from oscillators to microbalances. An important characteristic of AT-cut quartz crystals is that the resonant frequency of such crystals is independent of the first-order temperature, which is desirable for mass sensing and timing applications. AT cut crystals vibrate in thickness shear mode - the applied voltage on the cutting surface generates shear stress inside the crystal. In this example, the vibration of the AT cut thickness shear oscillator is analyzed, with emphasis on the mechanical response of the system in the frequency domain. The effect of series capacitors on mechanical resonance is also analyzed. Adding series capacitors is a common technique for tuning crystal oscillators.
