02 Applications
03 What is the meaning of plasma surgery?
By using pure plasma energy, no electricity passes through any patient tissue. Pure plasma energy differs from conventional, argon-enhanced, or fluid-enhanced electrosurgery in which an electric current flows through the tissue to create the desired effect. • Current applied to tissue can generate arcing and sparks.
The fundamental principle of plasma therapy involves the activation of NaCl and other electrolytes into a low-temperature plasma by utilizing a stable electric field that operates at an ultra-low frequency of 100kHz. This results in the formation of a thin plasma layer located approximately 100μm in front of the electrode.
Typically, when a NaCl molecule is excited under a stable electric field of 100kHz, it acquires a kinetic energy of 8 electron volts. The energy required to break a peptide bond is 4 electron volts. Hence, the targeted tissue cells are disintegrated at the molecular level. Proteins and other tissue components undergo lysis and transform into low molecular weight gases like H2, O2, CO2, N2, and methane. This process yields cutting and ablation effects while maintaining relatively low temperatures ranging from 40-70°C. Due to its ability to operate within this temperature range, it is commonly referred to as temperature-controlled radiofrequency (TCRF) therapy.
