Description

Polyurea, dubbed the "greatest invention in the coatings industry" and one of the most promising high-tech materials of the 21st century, is a familiar term to many. Commonly, polyurea is categorized into hand-applied and sprayed types. But what distinguishes these two?

Sprayed Polyurea vs. Hand-Applied Polyurea: Which Performs Better?

Sprayed polyurea is further divided into aromatic and aliphatic types. Aromatic sprayed polyurea, the first-generation, is now complemented by aliphatic sprayed polyurea, the second-generation, offering improved mechanical properties and aging resistance with reduced reactive activity. Sprayed polyurea, comprising Components A and B, cures rapidly (about 10 seconds), thus requiring large-scale spray equipment.

Features of Sprayed Polyurea:

  1. Quick reaction, suitable for any surface, including curves, without sagging.
  2. Excellent stability, minimally affected by environmental factors.
  3. Superior physical properties, achieving desired thickness in one application.

Drawbacks of Sprayed Polyurea:

  1. Complex application process, requiring professional operation.
  2. Contains toxic elements, demanding strict protective measures.
  3. Ideal for large projects, challenging for precise local applications, with potential contamination in non-sprayed areas.
  4. Moderate weather resistance and adhesion.

Sprayed Polyurea vs. Hand-Applied Polyurea: Which Performs Better?

Hand-applied polyurea, primarily polyaspartic polyurea, represents the third-generation. This innovative dual-component, slow-reacting (relative to sprayed polyurea) material boasts high weather resistance. Polyaspartic polyurea ingeniously modifies the reactive groups of traditional polyurea, simplifying application and broadening its use.

Characteristics of Polyaspartic Polyurea:

  1. Adjustable activation time (ranging from minutes to hours), easy application through various methods like brushing, spraying, or rolling.
  2. Low odor, high solids content, and low VOC emissions, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and does not require baking.
  3. Excellent overall performance, withstanding weather, wear, and aging, capable of curing at low temperatures.

For different scenarios, both sprayed and hand-applied polyurea have their merits. The choice depends on the specific performance requirements of the application.

Feiyang has been specializing in the production of raw materials for polyaspartic coatings for 30 years and can provide polyaspartic resins, hardeners and coating formulations. Some of our polyaspartic coating formulations: Polyaspartic Coating
