The hysteresis brake is an exceptional component for controlling torque and tension. The hysteresis brake comprises of two essential components: rotor and stator pole. The rotor is made up of a specific hysteresis material and there exists a certain gap in the stator magnetic pole. The rotor rotates within the gap.
An electrical coil is energized, which generates a magnetic field in the gap. This magnetic field causes the rotor to undergo a hysteresis effect. The hysteresis rotor produces the rated torque when it overcomes the hysteresis force under the impact of external forces.
The torque is only linked to the excitation current's magnitude and is not influenced by the speed. This eventually leads to the achievement of non-contact torque transmission.
In current-controlled hysteresis brakes, the torque adjustment and control is managed through the excitation coil, which provides complete control of the torque by adjusting the DC current of the coil. With this control, the torque can be adjusted from a minimum value, bearing resistance, to a maximum value that ranges from 10-20% above the rated torque. Although these brakes use the same working principle as our permanent magnet hysteresis brakes, the magnetic field is replaced with a magnetic field coil, which provides the precise magnetic field strength required for the rated torque.
There are three types of hysteresis brakes that can be categorized by the cooling method. Firstly, we have the natural air cooling type, which relies on natural convection to disperse heat away from the unit. Secondly, the compressed air cooling method utilizes compressed air to cool down the brake and increase its ability to absorb heat. Finally, there is the blower cooling method, which uses a blower to circulate air over the brake, providing effective heat dissipation.
