Description

Potassium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula KOH, and is commonly called caustic potash.

Along with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), this colorless solid is a prototypical strong base.

Potassium hydroxide is usually sold as translucent pellets, which become tacky in air because KOH is hygroscopic.

Consequently, KOH typically contains varying amounts of water (as well as carbonates -see below). Its dissolution in

water is strongly exothermic. Concentrated aqueous solutions are sometimes called potassium lyes. Even at high

temperatures, solid KOH does not dehydrate readily.

Usage

KOH can use in many fields as below :

Used as a desiccant, absorbent, used to make oxalic acid and various potassium salts, and also used in electroplating, engraving,

lithography and so on. In the pharmaceutical industry, used in the production of potassium borohydride, , Used in the light industry for the production of potash soap, alkaline batteries, and cosmetics (such as cold cream, snow cream, and shampoo). In the dye industry, used in the production of VAT dyes, such as VAT blue RSN, etc.

In the electrochemical industry, used for electroplating, engraving, etc. In the textile industry, it is used for printing and dyeing, bleaching

and mercerizing, and is widely used as the main raw material for the manufacture of man-made fibers and polyester fibers.

In addition, it is also used for metallurgical heating agents and leather degreasing.

Used as an absorbent for analytical reagents, saponification reagents, carbon dioxide, and water.

Storage

Potassium hydroxide easily gets damp and decomposed. Once coming into contact with the air, it will absorb carbon dioxide from the air and become degraded. It should therefore be stored in a dry place with intact packaging to keeep it from becoming damp. And it should be stored and carried separately from any acids. Aluminum, tin, lead, zine and its alloys, explosives, peroxides, ammonium salts,inflammables,etc.Puring transportation it should be protected with covering, handle it with care to avoid packaging damage.
