Coupler draft gear is an important part of railway rolling stocks. It connects locomotives and trailer vehicles and keep them at a certain distance from each other. It transfers and alleviates the longitudinal forces, such as traction and impact, generated by the train during operation or shunting.

In China Railway, all the couplers used for railway freight cars are automatic couplers, including No.16, No.17, No.13B, No.13A and No.13 couplers. No.2 couplers were used in 1960S and had been phased out gradually.
