Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. One of the most effective ways to diagnose syphilis is through screening tests.

There are several types of screening tests available for syphilis diagnosis. The most common and widely used test is the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test. This test detects the presence of antibodies in the blood that are produced by the body in response to the infection. It is a simple blood test that can be done in a laboratory or a clinic. The VDRL test is highly sensitive and can accurately identify syphilis infection in most cases.

• To use a capillary tube: Fill the capillary tube and transfer approximately 50 uL of fingerstick whole blood specimen to the specimen well (S) of test device, then add 1 drop of buffer (approximately 40 u L) and start the timer. See illustration below.
• To use hanging drops: Allow 2 hanging drops of fingerstick whole blood specimen (approximately 50uL) to fall into the specimen well (S) of test device, then add 1 drop of buffer (approximately 40 u L) and start the timer. See illustration below.
