Tribrach

A tribrach is an attachment plate used to attach a surveying instrument, for example a theodolite, total station, GNSS antenna or target to a tripod. A tribrach allows the survey instrument to be repeatedly placed in the same position over a surveying marker point with submillimetre precision, by loosening and re-tightening a lock to adjust the instrument base in a horizontal plane.

How do tribrachs work?

A tribrach uses an optical plumb sight for vertical orientation. Rough field conditions can jar the optical plumb sight out of adjustment, leading to inaccurate measurements by survey instruments mounted on the tribrach. Readjustment is relatively easy to do. Set up the surveyor’s tripod and attach the tribrach to the tripod head.

How to make a tribrach on a tripod?

Mark a point on the floor, precisely level the tribrach, and center the image in the optical plummet. Draw a pencil line on the tripod head precisely outlining the tribrach. Rotate the tribrach 120 degrees and fit it to the pencil outline.

Can I use a tribrach with a total station?

You can use a laser tribrach with any type of laser measuring tool, but you can also use it with a total station or any other surveying instrument. This device will allow you to attach your instrument to a tripod, so it can be more stable while you’re using it.
