What is alternator freewheel clutch?

An OAP simply allows the alternator to freewheel when the belt speed drops. OAPs are engineered with one-way clutches that provide the ability to allow the rotational inertia of the alternator to “overrun” during any belt deceleration event.

What is the purpose of the clutch pulley on the alternator?

Each time the alternator is turned on and off (about 3 times per second), the clutch pulley will overspeed the heavy rotor of the alternator and absorb vibration. The result is more stable idling, no belt Chi sound, longer service life of alternator, power steering pump, water pump, diaphragm belt and automatic belt tensioner.
