1. Chemical properties
Chemical formula: CH₃COONa
Molecular weight: 82.03 g/mol (anhydrous matter); 136.08 g/mol (trihydrate)
Structure: Composed of the radical acetate ion (CH₃COO⁻) and sodium ion (Na +).
pH value: The aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, pH is about 8-9.
2. Physical properties
Appearance:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: white crystalline powder.
Sodium acetate trihydrate (CH₃COONa·3H₂O) : colorless transparent crystal.
Solubility:
Soluble in water, solubility increases significantly with temperature (at 20°C, about 46.5 g per 100 mL of water).
Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble.
Melting point:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: 324°C.
Sodium acetate trihydrate: 58°C (dehydration decomposition).
Density:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: 1.528 g/cm³.
Sodium acetate trihydrate: 1.45g /cm³.
Hygroscopic: Sodium acetate trihydrate is easy to hygroscopic, and anhydrous sodium acetate hygroscopic is low.
3. Thermal stability
Heated decomposition. When heated to high temperatures, sodium acetate decomposes to
form sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) and methane (CH₄)
The role of sodium acetate in industrial waste gas treatment
1. Acid gas absorption
(1) Absorption of sulfur dioxide (SO₂)
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfite (Na₂SO₃) and acetic acid (CH₃COOH) :
The resulting sodium sulfite can be further oxidized to sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄), which removes sulfur dioxide from the exhaust gas.
Application scenario:
Coal-fired power plant: used to treat sulfur dioxide in coal-fired flue gas.
Metallurgical industry: used to treat sulfur-containing waste gas produced in the metallurgical process.
(2) Absorption of hydrogen chloride (HCl)
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can react with hydrogen chloride to form sodium chloride (NaCl) and acetic acid (CH₃COOH) :
Hydrogen chloride is removed from exhaust gas by reaction.
Application scenario:
Chemical production: used to treat chlorine waste gas produced in the chemical process.
Waste incineration: used to deal with hydrogen chloride produced in the process of waste incineration.
2. Neutralize alkaline gases
(1) Neutralizing ammonia (NH₃)
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can react with ammonia to form ammonium acetate (CH₃COONH₄) :
Ammonia is removed from exhaust gas by reaction.
Application scenario:
Fertilizer production: used to deal with ammonia produced during fertilizer production.
Sewage treatment plant: used to treat ammonia produced during sewage treatment.
3. Other applications
(1) Hydrogen sulfide absorption (H₂S)
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can react with hydrogen sulfide to form sodium sulfide (Na₂S) and acetic acid (CH COOH) :
Hydrogen sulfide is removed from exhaust gas by reaction.
Application scenario:
Petroleum refining: Used to deal with hydrogen sulfide produced in the petroleum refining process.
Sewage treatment plant: used to treat hydrogen sulfide produced during sewage treatment.
(2) Absorption of nitrogen oxides (NOₓ)
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can react with nitrogen oxides to form sodium nitrate (NaNO) and acetic acid (CH₃) :
Removal of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases by reaction.
Application scenario:
Automobile exhaust treatment: used to treat nitrogen oxides in automobile exhaust.
Chemical production: used to treat nitrogen oxides produced in the chemical process.
