Structure: Composed of the radical acetate ion (CH₃COO⁻) and sodium ion (Na +).
pH value: The aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, pH is about 8-9.

Appearance:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: white crystalline powder.
Sodium acetate trihydrate (CH₃COONa·3H₂O) : colorless transparent crystal.
Solubility:
Soluble in water, solubility increases significantly with temperature (at 20°C, about 46.5 g per 100 mL of water).
Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble.
Melting point:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: 324°C.
Sodium acetate trihydrate: 58°C (dehydration decomposition).
Density:
Anhydrous sodium acetate: 1.528 g/cm³.
Sodium acetate trihydrate: 1.45g /cm³.
Hygroscopic: Sodium acetate trihydrate is easy to hygroscopic, and anhydrous sodium acetate hygroscopic is low.

Heated decomposition. When heated to high temperatures, sodium acetate decomposes to
form sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) and methane (CH₄)
What role does sodium acetate play in industrial heavy metal removal
1. Precipitation of heavy metal ions
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can react with some heavy metal ions (such as lead, chromium, copper, zinc, etc.)
to form insoluble precipitates.
For example, sodium acetate reacts with lead ions (Pb² +) to produce a lead acetate precipitate:
The resulting sediment can be separated by filtration or sedimentation tanks,
thereby removing heavy metals from the wastewater.
Application scenario:
Electroplating wastewater treatment: remove lead, chromium,
copper and other heavy metal ions in electroplating wastewater.
Metallurgical wastewater treatment: remove zinc, nickel and other heavy metal ions in metallurgical wastewater.
2. Adjust the pH value
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate aqueous solution is weakly alkaline and can be used to regulate the pH value of wastewater.
Proper pH value is conducive to the formation of hydroxide precipitation of heavy metal ions.
For example, under alkaline conditions lead ions (Pb² +) produce lead hydroxide (Pb(OH)₂) precipitates:

3. Complexation
Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can form soluble complexes with some heavy metal ions and change its chemical properties.

Principle of action:
Sodium acetate can be used as a flocculating agent to enhance the
effect of flocculants (such as polyaluminum chloride, polyacrylamide).
