High Reflectivity Thermoplastic Paint for Roadway Marking Coating for Improved Road Visibility
Product Description
What is Thermoplastic Paint?
Definition and Composition
Thermoplastic paint is a type of material used for road and pavement markings. It is composed of thermoplastic resins, pigments for color, glass beads for reflectivity, and fillers to add bulk. The resins, which can include hydrocarbons, alkyds, or modified acrylics, are the key component that allows the material to be melted and reformed.
Application and Properties
Unlike traditional paints, thermoplastic paint is heated to high temperatures (around 200°C or 392°F) and applied in a molten state. It then cools and hardens to form a tough, durable surface. This process makes it resistant to wear from traffic and harsh weather, with glass beads ensuring it reflects light for better nighttime visibility.
Common Uses
It is primarily used for road markings, such as lane lines, crosswalks, and parking lot striping, due to its longevity and safety benefits, especially in high-traffic areas.
Unexpected Detail: Safety and Environmental Considerations
Interestingly, thermoplastic paint is often considered safer for the environment and personnel, as it’s a solid material that’s melted rather than a liquid with volatile solvents, reducing exposure risks during application.

Steps to Use Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint
1. Surface Preparation
- Ensure the road surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, dirt, grease, or moisture for proper adhesion.
- For old roads, remove any loose paint or debris.
- If necessary, apply a primer to improve adhesion, especially on concrete surfaces.
2. Heating the Thermoplastic Paint
- Use a preheater or thermoplastic melting kettle to heat the paint to around 180-200°C (356-392°F).
- Stir continuously to maintain an even consistency and prevent burning.
3. Application of the Paint
- Hand or Machine Application:
- Screed, Extrusion, or Spray Machine – For large road markings, use a specialized road marking machine.
- Hand-Pushed Applicator – Suitable for smaller projects or touch-ups.
- Apply the molten thermoplastic evenly on the road surface at a thickness of 1.5 to 3 mm.
4. Adding Glass Beads
- While the paint is still hot, sprinkle glass beads on top to enhance reflectivity.
- Some thermoplastic paints contain pre-mixed glass beads, but additional beads may still be applied manually or automatically.
5. Cooling and Curing
- The marking cools and hardens within 2-5 minutes, forming a durable and traffic-resistant layer.
- Allow sufficient time for full curing before opening to traffic.
6. Quality Check
- Inspect for proper thickness, adhesion, and reflectivity.
- Remove excess material and touch up any defects.
