It affects factors such as bearing stiffness, heat generation, and operating temperature. Bearings with greater internal clearance have higher operating temperatures but can accommodate higher levels of misalignment. Conversely, bearings with reduced internal clearance offer improved rigidity but are less tolerant of misalignment.

Spherical roller bearings can be equipped with different cage designs to guide and retain the rolling elements. Common cage designs include stamped steel cages, machined brass cages, and polyamide cages. Each cage material has its advantages and limitations in terms of load capacity, operating temperature, and resistance to wear and corrosion.
