Molded / Custom EPDM Gaskets Resistance to Water Steam Alkalis Acids and Oxidants
Introduction:
Hongum specializes in the manufacturing of precision die cut and molded EPDM rubber gaskets and seals for applications and industries worldwide. EPDM rubber is one of the most popular, versatile materials available. EPDM is known for its excellent resistance to heat, ozone, sunlight and aging. Its distinctive ability to stabilize color and resist harsh weather conditions makes it and ideal choice for outdoor applications. EPDM features excellent resistance to water, steam, alkalis, acids and oxidants. It is also sulfur and peroxide curable. EPDM can withstand temperatures spanning from -40°F to 250°F, intermittent to +275°F.
The main products of rubber sealing gaskets are: silicone pads, nitrile rubber pads, fluorine rubber pads, and other rubber pads.
Die Cut EPDM Gaskets
Hongum provides die cut EPDM gaskets and waterjet cut EPDM gaskets in a wide variety of grades, thicknesses, and hardness. The standard thickness of EPDM rubber ranges from 1/64″ to 1/4″ thick. EPDM is generally black in color with the exception of FDA Approved EPDM which is white. The hardness (durometer) of EPDM rubber typically spans from 40 to 80 durometer, Shore A. EPDM rubber is available with or without pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing.
Molded EPDM Gaskets
Hongum specializes in EPDM gaskets and seals. Our custom EPDM molding capabilities include Compression Molding, Transfer Molding, and Rubber Injection Molding. EPDM compounds are available from 40 to 90 durometer, Shore A. EPDM rubber most commonly is black in color however custom color compounding is available upon request. EPDM molding tolerances are compliant with rubber molding industry standard RMA A2 Precision tolerances.
EPDM Material:
EPDM rubber is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and non-conjugated dienes, which began commercial production in 1963. The annual world consumption is 800,000 tons. The most important feature of EPDM is its superior oxidation resistance, ozone resistance and corrosion resistance. Since EPDM belongs to the polyolefin (PO) family, it has excellent vulcanization characteristics. Among all rubbers, EPDM has the lowest specific gravity and can absorb a large amount of fillers and oils with little effect on properties, so that low-cost rubber compounds can be made.
When choosing a gasket material, there are several factors to keep in mind to ensure the one chosen is appropriate for the intended application. Some of the key considerations are:
Temperature: | what temperature range is it expected to withstand? |
Pressure: | what pressure range is it expected to withstand? |
Media: | what materials will it be exposed to? (e.g., are the process fluids abrasive or corrosive?) |
UV and ozone exposure: | will it be exposed to UV radiation and ozone? |
Product standards: | is it subject to any industry-specific product requirements? (e.g., does it need EMI shielding properties?) |
Industry standards: | is it subject to any other industry-specific standards? (e.g., does it need to meet ASTM, UL, or Mil-spec requirements?) |
