4. Installation of SKF SPEEDI-SLEEVE wear bushings

Although installation is simple, it should be done carefully to achieve the best results. Since thin-walled bushings are an interference fit, any interference on the shaft surface may show up on the bushing surface and cause the seal to leak. Therefore, before installation, the shaft seal mating surface must be carefully cleaned and any burrs or rough spots filed off. Deep wear grooves, scratches or very rough surfaces should be treated with a suitable epoxy metal powder filler. The bushing must be placed on the shaft before the filler hardens.

SKF Speedi-Sleeves should not be installed on keyways, cross holes, splines or threads as this will cause the sleeve to deform, making it difficult for the seal to follow the deformed surface when rotating.

SKF Speedi-Sleeves should not be heated before installation. If heated, the sleeve will expand, but when it cools, it may not shrink to its original size, resulting in a loose fit on the shaft.

Installation Steps

1) Clean the seal mating surface on the shaft. File off any burrs or rough spots and make sure the bushing is not installed in a keyway, cross hole, spline or other similar area.

2) Measure the diameter of the unworn portion of the shaft where the bushing will be installed (Figure 2). Measure in three locations and take the arithmetic average to ensure that the shaft size is within the recommended specifications. If the average diameter is within the range of the given bushing size, the bushing will have enough interference with the shaft to avoid the need for adhesive and prevent the bushing from sliding or rotating on the shaft.

3) Determine the location where the bushing will be installed and must cover the wear area. Measure the exact location or mark it directly on the surface. The wear bushing must be placed over the wear area and not just installed on the end of the shaft or flush with the end of the shaft.

4) Shallow wear grooves do not require filling. However, a thin layer of non-hardening sealant can be applied to the ID surface of the wear bushing. Clean any sealant that has entered the shaft or the OD surface of the wear bushing.

5) If the shaft has deep marks, fill the groove with epoxy-type metal powder filler. Install the bushing before the filler hardens, so that the bushing can wipe off the excess filler. Clean any excess filler from the OD surface of the wear bushing.

6) Again, heating cannot be used to install SKF Speedi-Sleeve wear bushings.

7) If the flange needs to be removed after installation, the OD of the flange should be cut to a radius somewhere before installation. First install the wear bushing with the rib end on the shaft. Then, place the installation tool on the bushing (fig. 3).

8) Tap the installation tool gently until the sleeve covers the worn shaft surface (fig. 4). If the installation tool is too short, use a long, burr-free tube or a square-ended cartridge. Make sure the inner diameter of the round tube and the installation tool are the same. Be careful not to scratch the outer diameter of the precision-ground sleeve.

9) SKF Speedi-Sleeve wear-resistant sleeves should always be installed so that the sleeve is completely seated on the shaft. The edges must not protrude or extend beyond the shaft chamfer, as sharp edges could cut the sealing lip during seal installation.

10) If the flange needs to be removed, first twist the flange with needle-nose pliers and pull it up, then grip it with the pliers and roll it up until it pulls off. Be careful not to pull the end of the sleeve off the shaft as this will leave a jagged edge. The flange must be removed carefully to avoid damaging the outer diameter of the sleeve.

11) After installing the wear bushing, check again for burrs that could damage the seal.

12) Before installing the seal, lubricate the bushing with system media.

13) Perform seal installation.
