Batten screws are pretty much an Australian invention, it has a countersunk head so it lies flat in the timber The nternal hex drive makes you get plenty of leverage to tighten them up.
As a heavy duty fastener which comes in various lengths starting at 50mm and are all 14g (7mm) thick. Bugle head with nibs under the head helps with countersunking. Type 17 auger point helps the screw penetrate quickly into the timber wood while the coarse threads clear the cuttings, some hardwoods still need a pilot hole though as they can be as hard as concrete.
