Self-Aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls, a spherical raceway located in the outer ring, and two deep raceway grooves in the inner ring. The raceway in the outer ring along with the two rows of balls helps to work over a vast range of contact angles.
These bearings align themselves accurately with the shaft and assembly without causing tension on the rest of the bearing assembly. This type of bearing is recommended when alignment of the shaft and housing is difficult as the shaft may flex. The outer ring has a spherical raceway and its center of curvature coincides with that of the bearing. This gives the axis of the inner ring, balls and cages an area of deflection.
