Environmental challenge of sintered ballast water filter:

Ballast water is taken on board in the port of origin to stabilize a ship and will be discharged in the port of destination. The ballast water does include organisms like bacteria, plankton, viruses, small fish, crabs or jellyfish which are then brought to new habitats and where they can overtake the existing ecological systems and sustainably change the due to the new types. This is why the treatment of ballast water is legally required.

Many organisms have evolved and adapted to a capacity where they can endure stressful environments such as low dissolved oxygen concentration, desiccation, or toxins. Thus, ballast water filtration and separation is the best way to eliminate these organisms, as well as other sediment, prior to a main disinfection treatment. In order to meet proposed US standards anticipated to be 100x more restrictive than IMO specifications, this type of ballast water filtration is essential.
