Seamless 904L Stainless Steel Pipe, also known as ASTM B677 UNS N08904 Pipe, stands as a low-carbon, high-alloy austenitic stainless steel. This steel grade thrives in harsh corrosion conditions, originally designed for its corrosion resistance in dilute sulfuric acid.
With a fully austenitic structure, 904L exhibits lower sensitivity to precipitate ferrite and sigma phases compared to traditional molybdenum-rich austenitic grades. Its relatively high content of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper translates into excellent corrosion resistance, particularly under sulfuric and phosphoric conditions.
Seamless 904L Stainless Steel Pipe offers exceptional formability, weldability, and toughness. It excels in resisting pitting and crevice corrosion, showcasing superb resistance to stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. The maximum operating temperature for this pipe reaches 450 degrees Celsius (824 degrees Fahrenheit).
Applications include sulfuric acid production and transport, metal pickling in sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid production and concentration, seawater handling, brackish water, condensers, heat exchangers, and general piping projects. It’s also utilized in pulp and paper industries, gas scrubbing, and chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.
Keep in mind that while 904L shares welding and forming characteristics with 316L, it cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
