3D printing service
3D printing for rapid prototyping and production in as fast as 1 day. Get a 3D printing quote with DFM analysis today — no matter what stage your project is at.Structural integrity in 3D printing is important as 3D prints must not collapse while functioning. 3D printing is a popular manufacturing process with wide acceptance because of the quality it delivers. In terms of improving the strength of 3D printed parts, there are many things that come to play.
Our 3D Printing Processes
1. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
Lifecycle | Lead Time | Resolution | Infill | Materials |
Functional testing, low to mid volume prototyping (10s - 100s) | 3-5days | 0.05mm | 100% (solid) | Nylon |
3D Printing Materials(Nylon 12)
Processes | Production Time | Colors | Resolution | Infill
| Applications |
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
| 3 days (rush) 5 days (standard) | White, Black | 0.1 mm | 100% (solid) | Functional prototypes, mechanical applications |
Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) | 3 days (rush), ≥5 days (standard) | Grey, Black | 0.08mm | Prototyping, Bridge-level Production |
Material Properties(Nylon 12)
Process | Tensile Strength | Elongation at Break | Modulus of Elasticity | Flexural Strength |
SLS | 48 MPa (6962 PSI) | 20% | 1500 MPa (217000 PSI) | 58 MPa (8412 PSI) |
MJF | 48 MPa (6962 PSI) | 20% | 1935 MPa (280648 PSI) | 65 MPa (9428 PSI) |
2-Stereolithography (SLA)
Lifecycle | Lead Time | Resolution | Materials |
Short production runs, Prototyping | 3 days | 0.05 mm | Accura 25, Accura ClearVue, Accura 60, Accura Xtreme Grey or White 200 |
Material Properties
Tensile Strength | Elongation at Break | Modulus of Elasticity | Flexural Strength |
38 MPa (5510 psi) | 16% | 1620 MPa (325ksi) | 57 MPa (8267 psi) |
Design Recommendations
Max Part Size [x, y, z] | Min Clearance + Gaps for Fit | Min Wall Thickness |
10 x 10 x 10 inches (635 x 736 x 533 mm) | 0.5 mm between parts that need to be assembled 0.2 mm between shells of an interlocking part | 1 mm |
Increase Infill Density
One way of increasing the strength of a 3d print is by increasing the interior density. The interior density ranges from 0% to 100%, with zero means totally hollow while 100 means totally solid.
Theoretically, having a 100 infill density should make your 3D print very strong. However, practically most designers have noticed that anything beyond 70% has a lesser impact on strengthening the 3D print. Instead, there is a tremendous increase in filament use, printing time, cost, and burden on the 3D printer.
Increase Wall Thickness
Not only does increasing the wall thickness strengthen the printed material, but it also improves overhangs
(geometry shapes in 3D models that are difficult to print) and water tightness.
