Magnesium CNC Machining Services
Magnesium, a unique metal material in the CNC machine tool workshop, poses high processing risks due to its flammability. Experience
in magnesium machining is crucial for engineers.
The high thermal conductivity and the mechanical properties of magnesium make it one of the easiest materials for metal CNC machines. It is also a lightweight metal, about 35% lighter than aluminum, making it ideal for use in the automotive and aerospace industries.
However, there are risks to CNC milling magnesium, which include fire hazards as this material can burn underwater, nitrogen, and even CO2.
Pros and Cons of Magnesium CNC Parts
Magnesium Alloy
| Pros | Cons |
AZ31B | Lightweight with high strength; Good weldability and machinability; Moderate corrosion resistance | Higher risk of ignition; Lower wear resistance; Limited high-temperature performance
|
AZ91D | High strength and excellent casting properties; Good corrosion resistance; Suitable for complex shapes | Lower ductility compared to non-casting alloys; Flammability concerns during machining
|
AM60B | High impact toughness; Good casting properties; Moderate strength and hardness | Lower creep resistance; Reduced performance at high temperatures
|
WE43 | High strength, especially at elevated temperatures; Good corrosion resistance and weldability; Suitable for high-temperature applications
| Higher processing costs; More difficult to machine |
ZE41 | Excellent casting and mechanical properties; Good shock and corrosion resistance; Suitable for complex castings | More susceptible to performance decline at high temperatures; Relatively lower strength and hardness
|
The surface treatment of CNC magnesium alloy parts varies greatly depending on the application and function.
Magnesium Machining Benefits
Magnesium have low density but high strength and good rigidity. Such performance is very advantageous for the design of the integral component.
|
Magnesium has good toughness and strong shock absorption. It is very suitable for parts that are subject to impact—wheels; magnesium alloys have high damping capacity and are ideal materials for avoiding fatigue caused by vibration and noise.
|
Magnesium alloy has low heat capacity, fast solidification speed and good die casting performance. Due to the low heat capacity of the magnesium alloy, the production efficiency is 40% to 50% higher than that of the same aluminum alloy casting, and the casting size is more stable, the precision is higher, and the surface finish is better.
|
Magnesium alloys have excellent machinability; magnesium are the materials that are easier to machining in all common metals. High cutting speed and inexpensive cutting tools for low tool consumption.

Application Range:
Car engine accessory bracket, clutch housing, gearbox housing, instrument panel frame, steering wheel frame, seat frame, valve body mobile phone,Drone/camera.Magnesium alloy is very suitable for this kind of product because it is very light.
Why is magnesium hazardous?
While a magnesium workpiece is very difficult to ignite, the material becomes highly flammable when turned into powder or shavings.
This means the chips from machined magnesium can pose a fire safety risk.
That risk to machine shops is heightened because magnesium-induced fires are very difficult to extinguish. The combustion will persevere in nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. (This is why magnesium powders have historically been used in some explosive devices.)
The Characteristics of Magnesium Parts Can be as follows:
Type | Tolerance |
Linear dimension | +/- 0.015 mm |
Hole diameters (not reamed) | +/- 0.015 mm |
Shaft diameters | +/- 0.015 mm |
Part size's limit | 850 * 650 *550 mm |

How to safely machine magnesium?
Although it might sound daunting, it is perfectly safe to CNC machine magnesium if the right precautions are taken.
Avoid tight clearance angles
Although magnesium can be machined at fast speeds without compromising the quality of the part,
it is best to avoid tight clearance angles, because contact between the tool and workpiece increases friction and cutting temperature.
Maintain proper tool condition
Sharp cutting tools can reduce the fire hazard of machining magnesium.
Dull tools can rub and cause friction, which causes sparks and builds up heat where the sensitive magnesium chips
are being created. Needless to say, sharp tools will also produce better parts.
Most machinists use a carbide cutting tool with a large relief angle for machining magnesium.
Avoid water-based coolant
Although coolants reduce machining temperatures, a water-based coolant can actually increase the risk of a magnesium fire
as it will produce hydrogen gas.Avoid coolant altogether, or use a light mineral oil in place of standard coolant. Compressed air
or argon gas can also be used to reduce temperatures without the risk of exacerbating a potential fire.
