ASTM A514 steel plate, also known as T-1 steel plate, is a popular grade of quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel that offers high strength, weldability and machinability. Due to these properties, A514 is typically used in applications where wear resistance and the ability to withstand high impact are important.
A514 is heat-treated through quenching and tempering, a two-step heat treatment process that alters the grain structure of the material to increase strength, hardness and toughness.
A514/T-1 plate is available in eight grades: Grade B, Grade S, Grade H, Grade Q, Grade E, Grade F, Grade A and Grade P. The mechanical properties of these grades depend on thickness, but chemical properties may vary between grades.
Leeco Steel stocks the following standard sizes, but other sizes may be available for special orders.
GRADE | THICKNESS | WIDTH | LENGTH |
GRADE B | 3/16" – 1 1/4" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |
GRADE S | 3/16" – 2 1/2" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |
GRADE H | 3/16" – 2" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |
GRADE Q | 3/16" – 8" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |
GRADE E | 3/16" – 6" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |
GRADE F | 3/16" – 2 1/2" | 48" – 120" | UP TO 480" |

A514 steel plate’s chemical composition and heat treatment give the material greater toughness and strength compared to non-heat-treated carbon steel plate. These properties enable the material to withstand high levels of wear and make it a durable, long-lasting material.
The durability of A514 plate means it will need to be replaced less frequently than other, less durable materials, which can help save material costs in the long run.
While A514 steel is governed by ASTM code, which is widely accepted across the globe, some specific projects may require materials that are certified to meet other standards. For projects requiring EN standard materials, EN S700 or EN690 may be possible alternatives to A514, depending on project requirements.
Other Q&T steel plate grades have similar properties to A514 plate and may be suitable for use high wear and stress applications.
A514 steel plate is typically used for applications that require high resistance to wear and great strength without sacrificing weldability and machinability, such as construction equipment – like cranes – and use in industrial manufacturing, including heavy-load machines.
The following material properties are ASTM specifications and will be confirmed on the Mill Test Report.
GRADE | YIELD POINT (KSI) | TENSILE STRENGTH (KSI) | MIN. 8” ELONGATION % |
3/4" OR LESS THICKNESS | 100 | 110-130 | 18 |
GREATER THAN 3/4" TO 2.5" THICKNESS | 100 | 110-130 | 18 |
GREATER THAN 2.5" TO 6" THICKNESS | 90 | 100-130 | 16 |
