Lap Joint Pipe Flanges Definition:

The lap joint pipe flange is that set the flange on the pipe end by using steel ring and flanging. The flange
could be moved at the end of the pipe. Steel ring or flanging is the sealing surface, with flange to press th
em together. Because of the steel ring or the flanging block, the lap joint flange will not contact with the
liquid. So it is applicable to corrosion resistant pipelines.

Material of a Lap Joing Flange:

The stub end and lap joint flange is separated, so they could be different material grade,it is very common
that a carbon steel lap joint flange work together with a stainless steel stub end. The butt weld end of the
stub-end is like the neck of the weld neck flange, the diameter and thickness is according to the pipe for
connection.So the material of backing flange in a lap joing flange could be carbon steel commonly for low
cost,the material of stub end could be chosen as per the pipe material and fuild situation.

Lap joint flanges use a stub end that is welded to the pipe. A ring flange fits loosely around the stub end,
permitting easy flange alignment of the bolt holes. lap joint flange is also called Van Stone or Stub Flange.
The stub ends are available in three styles (Types A, B, and C) and two lengths (Short and Long).

Lap Joint Flanges have all the same common dimensions as any other flange named on this page however
it does not have a raised face, they used in conjunction with a "Lap Joint Stub End".

These flanges are nearly identical to a Slip On flange with the exception of a radius at the intersection of
the flange face and the bore to accommodate the flanged portion of the Stub End.

Their pressure-holding ability is little, if any, it better than that of Slip On flanges and the fatigue life for the
assembly is only one tenth that of Welding Neck flanges.

They may be used at all pressures and are available in a full size range.These flanges slip over the all pipe
and they are not welded or otherwise fastened to it. Bolting pressure itransmitted to the gasket by the pre-
ssure of the flange against the back of the pipe lap (Stub End).

Lap Joint flanges have certain special advantages:

1.Freedom to swivel around the pipe facilitates the lining up of opposing flange bolt holes.
2.Lack of contact with the fluid in the pipe often permits the use of inexpensive carbon steel flanges with

corrosion resistant pipe.
3.In systems which erode or corrode quickly, the flanges may be salvaged for re-use.
