Transmission lines typically carry the electric power from the source to substations where distribution lines branch off to supply the surrounding businesses and homes with power.

In some cases there is difficulty in making a distinction between utility transmission lines and utility distribution lines. Distribution lines can best be distinguished from transmission lines by their smaller rights-of-way. In addition to having taller poles and structures, a transmission line is accompanied by rights-of-way ranging from 75-200 feet and voltages around or above 69 kV.
