The ASTM A213 specification covers seamless ferritic and austenitic steel boiler, superheater and heat exchanger tubes, specifying grades T5, T9, T11, T12, T22, T91, etc.
Grades that contain the letter H in their designation have different requirements than similar grades that do not contain the letter H. These different requirements provide higher creep rupture strength than is normally achievable with similar grades without these different requirements.
Pipe sizes and thicknesses normally supplied to this specification are 1/8" [3.2 mm] ID to 5" [127 mm] OD and 0.015 to 0.500" [0.4 to 12.7 mm] inclusive, at minimum wall thickness or Average wall thickness (if specified on order). Tubes of other diameters may be furnished provided they meet all other requirements of this specification.
Due to the chemical composition of molybdenum (Mo) and chromium (Cr), A213 is often referred to as chrome molybdenum tube. Molybdenum increases the strength of the steel as well as the elastic limit, wear resistance, impact quality and hardenability. Molybdenum increases resistance to softening, inhibits grain growth and makes chrome steel less susceptible to embrittlement. Molybdenum is the single most effective additive for increasing high temperature creep strength. It also enhances the corrosion resistance of steel and inhibits pitting corrosion. Chromium (or chromium) is an essential component of stainless steel. Any steel that contains 12% or more chromium is considered stainless steel. Chromium is virtually irreplaceable in resisting oxidation at high temperatures. Chromium increases tensile strength, yield strength and hardness at room temperature. The composition chrome-molybdenum alloy steel pipe makes it ideal for use in power plants, refineries, petrochemical plants and oilfield services where fluids and gases are transported at extremely high temperatures and pressures.
