Overview
Monel K500 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel 400 with the added benefits of higher strength and hardness. These amplified properties, strength and hardness, are obtained by adding aluminum and titanium to a nickel-copper matrix and precipitating it through thermal processing, often called age hardening or aging. When in the age-hardened state, Monel K-500 is more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than Monel 400 in certain environments. Alloy K-500 has about three times the yield strength and twice the tensile strength compared to alloy 400. In addition, it can be further strengthened by cold working prior to precipitation hardening. This nickel steel alloy maintains its strength at 1200°F, but remains ductile and tough at 400°F, with a melting range of 2400-2460°F.
However, it is possible for a magnetic layer to form on the surface of the material during processing. Aluminum and copper may be selectively oxidized during the heating process, leaving a magnetic-rich nickel film on the outside. Pickling or bright soaking in acid can remove this magnetic film and restore the non-magnetic properties.

Compared to Alloy 400, Monel K500 round bar has approximately twice the tensile strength and three times the yield strength. In addition, alloy K500 can be strengthened even more by cold working prior to precipitation hardening. Welding of alloy K500 can be accomplished by a gas tungsten welding process.
