The alloy for ASTM A182 F321H stainless steel flanges is a titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel. An important feature of ASTM A182 F321H flanges is the alloy's good resistance to general corrosion. The A182 F321H material has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, even after the material is exposed to high temperature chromium carbide precipitation ranges (i.e., the range between 800°F and 1500°F). The alloy used for A182 grade F321H BLRF is known to resist oxidation in environments where temperatures can be as high as about 1500°F. Additionally, A182 Gr F321H SORF has higher creep and stress rupture strength properties compared to stainless steel alloys 304 and 304L. SS 321H blind flanges also have good toughness at lower temperatures. In fact, SS 321H Slip On Flange maintains its excellent toughness properties even at low temperatures. Therefore, it can be used not only in high temperature applications, but also in low temperature settings.

The ASTM A182-F316l material is a standard molybdenum bearing grade stainless steel. In austenitic stainless steel grades, this alloy is second only to 304 in importance. Molybdenum gives SA182M grade F316l better overall corrosion resistance compared to 304 grade. Therefore, the F316L grade has a particularly high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing media and environments.
Grade 316L, a low carbon version of the F316L pipe flange, is resistant to sensitization, also known as grain boundary carbide precipitation. Therefore, the Grade F316L is widely used for heavy-duty welded components with wall thicknesses in excess of 6 mm. The austenitic structure in ASTM A182 F316L also gives this grade excellent toughness properties, which can be observed at low temperatures.
Compared to other chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, A182 F316L stainless steel has higher creep strength, stress rupture strength and tensile strength even at high temperatures. SS 316L flanges have excellent performance in a wide range of atmospheric environments and in many corrosive media.
In general, werkstoff SA182 F316L tends to be more resistant to corrosive media than grade 304 stainless steel. Although these stainless steel 316L flanges are prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress-related corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60 °C, the SA182 F316L flanges are considered potable water resistant of. ASTM A182 Gr. F316L has shown corrosion resistance in drinking water, holding up to about 1000 mg/L of chloride at ambient temperature and further reduced to about 500 mg/L at 60 °C.
Flange ASTM A182 F316L is generally considered a standard "marine grade stainless steel". But ASTM A182 F316L is not resistant to warm sea water. 316L stainless steel flange material does tend to exhibit surface corrosion in many marine environments. This surface corrosion usually manifests as brown staining, especially in relation to cracks and rough surface finish.
The 316L stainless steel flange shows good oxidation resistance in intermittent applications up to 870 °C and continuous duty up to 925 °C. Continuous use of flange ASTM A182 F316L in the temperature range 425 °C - 860 °C is not recommended if subsequent water corrosion resistance is important in any application. Many 316L stainless steel flange manufacturers state that this alloy is more resistant to carbide precipitation and can be used in the above temperature range.
Corrosion resistance
Chromium, molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen all contribute to overall resistance to corrosion by various media.
Chromium is the primary agent for imparting corrosion resistance in neutral or oxidizing environments. Chromium,
molybdenum and nitrogen increase resistance to pitting corrosion. Nickel imparts an austenitic structure. Both nickel
and molybdenum provide higher resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking in reducing environments.
