Polishing technology of caster support
Basic mirror caster polishing steps
1. The white layer and over tempered layer on the front EDM surface are completely removed with
alumina grinding wheel.
2. Polish the surface with an oilstone strip (from coarse to fine) as follows: 180 # - 240 # - 320 # -
400 # - 600 # - 800 # (straighten the flatness) - 1000 # (800 # is usually used to correct the surface
flatness to avoid corrugation during subsequent caster polishing)
3. Use SiC sandpaper (from coarse to fine) to polish the surface as follows: 400 # - 600 # - 800 # -
1000 # - 1200 # - 1500 # - 2000 # (generally, 1500 # sandpaper is not recommended for pre
hardening steel to prevent surface overheating)
4. For 9um, use wooden strips (soft), for 6um, for 3um, use felt rollers, for 1um, use 100% cotton,
and polish casters with diamond paste; 9um (1800 #) - 6um (3000 #) - 3um (8000 #) - 1um (14000 #)
if finer polishing is required, such as 1 / 2um (60000 #) and 1 / 4um (100000 #), please ensure that it
is carried out in a dust-free environment.
5. When sanding with sandpaper, the sandpaper shall be adhered to the wood strip or bamboo chip:
wood strip or bamboo chip (hard) - suitable for low hardness, plane or corner grinding, wood strip or
bamboo chip (soft) - suitable for high hardness, round surface or complex shape grinding
6. Before each conversion of sandpaper or diamond paste, the hand and die surface must be
thoroughly cleaned. The workpiece shall be cleaned with mold washing water and soap.
7. Each time the sandpaper or oilstone strip is changed, the grinding direction (45-90 degrees)
shall be changed to ensure that the previous grinding mark is completely removed. In addition, it is
recommended to grind once when grinding with 800# or finer sandpaper.
8. Each grinding caster polishing shall start from the difficult polishing parts (such as corners and
grooves) and try not to polish the round. A hard caster polishing tool shall be selected for caster
polishing at the corners.
9. Each caster polishing tool can only use diamond paste of one particle size and be stored in a
dust-free container. Each container containing grinding or caster polishing tools shall store only
one grinding caster polishing tool. During manual caster polishing, diamond paste is applied to the
caster polishing tool, and during mechanical caster polishing, diamond paste is applied to the
workpiece.
10. Each caster polishing shall be completed in the shortest time. The caster polishing strength
shall also be adjusted with the hardness of the caster polishing tool and the particle size of the diamond
paste. For the smallest diamond paste, the caster polishing pressure shall only be equal to the weight
of the caster polishing tool.
11. The last caster polishing shall be carried out in the direction of product stripping. Before converting
diamond paste from sandpaper, the surface shall be thoroughly cleaned. Oil stains on the surface can
be effectively removed by using 100% cotton and a small amount of benzene.
12. If the surface is not processed by EDM, it can be processed directly from step 3. In addition, if the
dielectric liquid is mixed with silicon powder during surface EDM, the surface finish of the die will be
improved after processing. Therefore, caster polishing can be directly started from step 4 after
processing.
13. If the mold needs heat treatment, the surface shall be polished with 400# about sandpaper
before heat treatment.
14. If the mold needs surface ammoniation treatment, the surface shall be polished with 1200#
sandpaper before ammoniation, and then the white layer (about 20um) on the ammoniated surface
shall be completely removed with 800# sandpaper after ammoniation.
15. Before storing the mold, spray anti rust oil and ensure that the storage environment is dry and
dust-free, so as to prevent the surface from corrosion.
16. If orange peel is found during caster polishing, all defects shall be completely removed from the
last grinding process (such as 1200# sandpaper), and then the caster shall be polished again. The
pressure used for caster polishing shall be lower than before. If orange peel is still found after caster
polishing, it is recommended to conduct tempering treatment before RE polishing caster; If orange
peel is still found after caster polishing, it is recommended to increase the hardness (if allowed) and
then polish the caster again.
17. If a pinhole is found during caster polishing, use 400# sandpaper to grind off the pinhole, and
then polish the caster again.
