Direct hole bottom cleaning can involve the removal of discrete chips before they are re-ground or the erosion of rock flour, generated particularly by the action of blunt bit-teeth. In both these cases the hydraulics are working against chip hold-down forces related to the difference between the mud and pore pressurest . These can be reduced if the bit hydraulics limit the establishment of a low permeability skin on the hole bottom, thereby indirectly increasing the efficiency of hole bottom cleaning. It is expected that the removal of discrete chips will be controlled by the magnitude of the shear stresses and fluctuating pressures exerted on the chips by the flowing mud. On the other hand, the erosion of rock flour or mud cake will probably be controlled by the impact pressures on the hole bottom.
