Emergency medicine

Point-of-care emergency ultrasound has numerous applications in emergency medicine. This includes distinguishing between cardiac and pulmonary causes of acute dyspnea and the Focused Assessment of Ultrasound in Trauma (FAST) examination to evaluate for severe hemoperitoneum or cardiac tamponade following trauma. Other uses include helping to differentiate between causes of abdominal pain, such as gallstones and kidney stones. Emergency medicine residency programs have a long history of promoting the use of bedside ultrasound during physician training.

Gynecology and obstetrics

Gynecological ultrasonography examines the female pelvic organs (especially the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes) as well as the bladder, adnexa, and pouch of Douglas. It typically uses transducers designed for use through the lower abdominal wall, curved and scalloped approaches, and special transducers such as intravaginally.

Obstetric ultrasound, originally developed by Sir Ian Donald in the late 1950s and 1960s, is commonly used during pregnancy to examine fetal development and appearance. It can be used to identify many conditions that may be potentially harmful to the mother and/or baby, and which may go undiagnosed or have a delayed diagnosis without ultrasound examination. It is currently believed that the risks of having these conditions undiagnosed are greater than the small, if any, risks associated with having an ultrasound scan. However, its use for non-medical purposes, such as fetal "memento" videos and photos, is discouraged.
