Petrolatum tape, also known as wax tape or anti-corrosion tape, is commonly used for the protection of oil storage tanks against corrosion. It is a non-hardening, self-healing tape that provides a barrier to moisture and oxygen, preventing corrosion on the tank surface.
Petrolatum tape is composed of a flexible backing material, typically made of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), coated with a thick layer of petrolatum or petroleum-based wax. This coating acts as a barrier, sealing out moisture and preventing the corrosion process from occurring.
To apply petrolatum tape for corrosion protection on oil storage tanks, the following steps are typically followed:
1. Surface Preparation: The tank surface should be thoroughly cleaned and free from any dirt, rust, or loose paint. It is important to ensure a clean and smooth surface for proper adhesion of the tape.
2. Tape Application: The petrolatum tape is wrapped around the tank, overlapping each layer by approximately 50%. It is important to apply sufficient tension to ensure a tight fit and complete coverage of the tank surface. The tape can be easily molded to irregular shapes and contours of the tank.

Uses
For long-life corrosion protection,
sealing and waterproofing of atmospheric buried and submerged metal surfaces.
High degree of conformability
application over irregular surface profiles including gas utility, sewer, potable water, mining,
Application
55% overlap for all applications,
For vertical applications the tape shall begin at the bottom and proceed up – providing a“weatherboard” overlap.
“cigarette wrapped” when space is too restricted or confined to apply in the preferred spiral manner, with the overlap on the topside of the pipe –providing a “weatherboard” effect. At the completion of each roll, smooth the overlaps by hand. Maintain a 100mm overlap when overlapping one roll with the end of a new roll.
