Copper concentrates are mainly produced by flotation. The ore is crushed and milled to a particle size of less than 100 µm. This produces a mix of particles containing pure phases of primary or secondary copper sulfides. The ground ore is mixed with water and reagents, to form a slurry, where the copper sulfide mineral particles bind to the reagent, rendering a hydrophobic complex. Submitted to aeration, this complex binds preferentially to the air bubbles and floats to the surface producing a highly enriched, copper sulfide froth that can be skimmed off the top. This then passes through a cleaning process to remove unwanted impurities. In some cases, the concentrate is submitted to an additional processing step to extract a by-product (e.g. molybdenum sulfide). Finally, the copper concentrate is dried ready for transportation to the next step (smelting).

Features of the Hengyang Rotary Steam Dryer

The Hengyang steam dryer is a rotary-type dryer.3 It was developed for copperconcentrate drying. One of its key features and advantages is the rotation of the steam-tube package together with the rotary drum. The structural properties of the dryer improve water evaporation and eliminate tube wear.

Steam as an indirect heating medium offers at least two benefits: (1) it lowers temperatures in the dryer, and (2) with an outlet temperature of 100–120°C, the risk of fire ignition is very low.

When the copper concentrate dryer is rotating, the lifting plates inside the Rotary Dryer , mix the wet material and hot air together sufficiently so that the wet material can be dried effectively by the hot air. The moisture of the wet material is evaporated into water vapour.

The dried materials are discharged through the discharging hole as the product.

On the end of the Rotary Dryer , there is one high pressure induced draft fan which suck out the water vapour, and then the water vapour goes into the cyclone dust separator.

In the cyclone dust separator, the dust mixed with the steam is separated from the water vapour, and falls down and goes out of the bottom discharging hole of the cyclone dust separator. The water vapour finally goes into the atmosphere by the chimney directly.
