The motorcycle piston is one of the key components of the engine. It is located in the cylinder and connected to the crankshaft. It converts combustion energy into mechanical power through reciprocating motion. Pistons are usually made of aluminum alloy, which has the characteristics of high strength and lightweight.
Piston rings are annular parts installed on the piston, usually made of steel or cast iron. The main function of the piston ring is to seal the gap between the piston and the cylinder wall to prevent the high-pressure gas in the combustion chamber from leaking into the crankcase, and also to prevent the lubricating oil in the crankcase from entering the combustion chamber.
Usually, there are two or three ring grooves on the piston, which are used to install the upper and lower piston rings respectively. Among them, the upper piston ring is usually an oil ring, which is used to control the supply and retention of lubricating oil. The lower and middle piston rings (if present) are used to seal the cylinder and provide good compression.
Piston rings are subjected to high temperature and high pressure environments during engine operation, so they need to have wear resistance, high temperature resistance and good sealing properties. As a motorcycle gets more use and mileage, piston rings can wear out or fail, causing problems such as compression blow-by, fuel entering the crankcase, or increased fuel consumption. Therefore, regular inspection and replacement of piston rings is an important step in maintaining proper engine operation and performance.
