The nickel-chromium system shows that chromium is quite soluble in nickel. This is a maximum at 47% at the eutectic temperature and drops off to about 30% at room temperature. A range of commercial alloys is based on this solid solution. Such alloys have excellent resistance to high temperature oxidation and corrosion and good wear resistance.
The alloy combines low nickel content and low temperature factor of resisitivity. It is a highly attractive alternative to alloys with higher nickel content, such as Nikrothal 80. In most tubular element applications it is possible to achieve at least the same indicated service life by performing a slight element redesign.
Chemical Composition: 90% Ni, 10% Cr: Chromel is an alloy made of approximately 90 percent nickel and 10 percent chromium that is used to make the positive conductors of ANSI Type E (chromel-constantan) and K (chromel-alumel) thermocouples. It can be used up to 1100 °C in oxidizing atmospheres.
