ABOUT AMERICAN WALNUT:

American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a classic wood choice. Native to North America, Black Walnut trees grow in the Eastern half of the United States as well as in Ontario, Canada. It is unique because it is the only domestic dark brown species of wood. Black walnut has a dark heartwood and a light sapwood, which varies the color of walnut wood from a creamy white to a dark chocolate brown. Over time, American Black Walnut will naturally develop a fine patina, lightening slightly. This is a subtle effect that can be retained somewhat by sealants and oils which also enhances its beautiful grain. American Black Walnut veneer has a smooth, tight grain with some cathedrals. Burls and figures in walnut veneer show incredible movement that make for dramatic finished furniture or instruments.

Flat Cut Walnut Veneer, also referred to as Crown Cut or plain sliced, usually has the lighter sapwood around the outer parts cut out, just as one might cut off the fatty portions of meat. Walnut Veneer is a uniform brown tone and is reasonably priced, similar to that of maple and cherry. Walnut veneer is an excellent choice for woodworkers desiring a consistent look that avoids knots that invariably happen with solid lumber.
