Pneumatic Docking Fender

Pneumatic docking fender, also called Yokohama fender, has been used in port, harbor, and maritime operations for decades since it was developed in 1958. With the development of ship technology, this pneumatic docking fender is used extensively in ship-to-ship transfer operations and ship mooring and berthing operations. It’s always regarded as a buffer to reduce shock in between due to its excellent performance of great elasticity and abrasion-resistance.

Pneumatic docking fenders are divided into three types, including sling type, hydro-pneumatic type, and chain and tire net type. Each type plays a critical role in protecting the safety of marine operations.

Pneumatic Docking Fender Structure

① Outer rubber layer

Floating buffers are covered by the outer layer made of natural rubber. This rubber compound is strong enough to protect the inner layer and synthetic-cord layer from the damage of external forces and severe weather conditions due to its high elasticity and abrasion resistance.

② Synthetic-tire-cord layer

The Synthetic-tire-cord layer is made of synthetic-tire-cord fabrics, compared with synthetic canvas fabric and synthetic belt fabric, this reinforcement layer performs better in fatigue-resistance and pressure-holding.

③ Inner rubber layer

The inner layer is designed to seal the air inside the fender.

Pneumatic Docking Fender Classification

According to international pneumatic rubber fenders, floating buffer systems are divided into two categories. From the appearance, there are two types of marine fenders:

1.Initial Pressure 50 Kpa, P50 floating buffer

2.Initial Pressure 80 Kpa, P80 floating buffer
3.Type I, CTN Type, with chains and tire nets floating buffer

4.Type II, Sling Type, without chains and tire nets floating buffer

Pneumatic Docking Fender Advantage

1. Shape Conformant at Inclined Compression

Floating buffer is made of reinforced cord layers of high elasticity and flexibility, which enable it to make it shape conformant at inclined compression during ship-to-ship operations. Compared with solid fender and foam fender, the buffer is easier to distribute the load along the ship's body or berthing structure.

2. Relatively Low Economic Cost

With the advantage of compressive elasticity of air, the surface pressure of floating buffers is completely uniform, which is equal to the internal air pressure and makes it popular with LNG-ship terminals.
